I have a PGCE, an MA in English in Education, and many years of experience as a secondary school English teacher. I have also privately tutored many students and for three years supported trainee teachers at dozens of schools across north-east, east and south-east London as a sessional subject tutor for Teach First. More recently I have worked as a university coach at the University of East London with degree apprentices, supporting their learning journey towards professional accreditation in the health sector. I now work as a Careers Advisor where I find many common strands with English teaching, such as the importance of imagination, of finding and using one’s voice, and of checking out your sources, to name but three!
I’ve taught in Oxfordshire and in London as a Second in English, as an Acting Head of English, and as a Key Stage Coordinator of Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 English. I’m an experienced teacher and tutor of English Language and Literature at GCSE and A level across all the different exam boards. As well as writing education books for major publishing houses, I have produced national frameworks, teaching plans, resources, web content, and training materials for what was then known as the Department for Children, Schools and Families (now known as the Department for Education). I’ve also written for Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre’s education wing and for the National Literacy Trust, and recorded podcasts for students about set texts.
I’m passionate about literature and the humanities, social justice, and access to and participation in the arts for all, and I strive to promote creativity, criticality and connection in my own work and creative engagement.
